🦍Testosterone Lowers Anxiety and Fear!!
One of the most underrated effects of testosterone is its ability to drastically reduce anxiety and fear.
This has been illustrated over and over again in countless studies (R).
We all know the effects that testosterone has on muscle mass, strength, and some even know its effects on fat loss (which are still very underrated by the way). But few are aware of testosterone (and DHT)’s potent affects on lowering anxiety, fear, and even depression.
From an evolutionary perspective, this makes all of the sense in the world.
Testosterone evolved to make males pursue mates, in order to have sex and reproduce.
Due to the presence of rivals competing for the same goal, and the fierce competition for resources in nature, testosterone also evolved to help males fight off rivals, while simultaneously giving males the motivation and desire to do hard, difficult things (such as amassing resources, protecting territory, forming alliances etc.).
Both the pursuit of sex and the fighting off of rivals are activities that require massive amounts of confidence, so it is no surprise that testosterone and its metabolites (including even estrogens) evolved to target brain areas responsible for fear, anxiety, depression, mood, and aggression.
Some of the pathways by which Testosterone produces these anxiolytic effects are also well known, as they include the collaboration of many neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, GABA etc.), hormones, brain regions (mainly the amygdala, hypothalamus, regions of the frontal cortex, and more), and obviously genes (including mutations in the androgen receptor and estrogen receptors).
Now of course, testosterone is not the ONLY thing that affects anxiety (nothing ever is), but if you’re struggling with anxiety and depression, consider boosting your testosterone, DHT, and fixing your net androgen status (by lowering your anti-androgens such as prolactin and cortisol as well).
